Chris and I have been in Qingdao for a few days now getting used to the conditions in preparation for the Olympics.
We applogize for not getting an update up sooner, but we have had an interesting technical challenge--for politcal reasons China blocks many websites from being accessed. Our website is hosted by Google Blogs, which is blocked. Therefore, I cannot access our website, which means I cannot post updates. This update was emailed, and then posted by sister Katy.
It's been an exciting few days, learning how to function in a completely different country. We've been working hard to make safe food choices and trying to avoid getting sick as has happened to many of the US athletes who have been here in past years. We're also getting used to fact that most chinese speak almost no English, and communication is very difficult.
We've been on the water the last few days and we have had our first taste of the very challenging conditions. Light wind, strong current, swell and chop all add up to difficult sailing. We've learned some key lessons on our first few days, and look forward to learning more over the coming week.
Depsite the challenges of living and sailing here, we are loving it. We're excited to learn to thrive in these conditions.
A couple website to check out:
